Vocational education is Ghana’s future – Spio-Garbrah

Former Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah has identified vocational and technical educational as the solution to the unemployment problem in the country.

According to him, if the youth are trained and their skills sharpened, they will be able to create their own jobs and thereby reduce the unemployment rate.

Speaking on the State of Affairs on GHOne television on Thursday, 29 March 2018,Dr Spio-Garbrah who announced his intention of contesting in the NDC’s flagbearership race ahead of the 2020 elections said: “I know this government has been talking about it and all past governments have spoken about it a lot, that is vocational and technical education.

“That really has to be the future of this country. Unfortunately, as we speak now, most people who come to service your car or my car don’t ever show a certificate of any kind and we just let them take our car and mess it up.

“Somebody comes to your house to fix the air condition or your television and messes everything for you. In Germany, Switzerland and in particular in Austria, these are countries where vocational education have been taken very seriously, where various professional bodies exist for certifications of all levels of professionals – caterers, bakers and hair dressers and barbers so that their value in the society can increase so they might get paid a little more than they are being paid now. So I’m very much in youth entrepreneurship.”
