The Minority spokesperson for Communication Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini has said his colleague Eric Opoku will not be intimated from his duties as a member of Parliament despite persistent attacks on him by individuals suspected to be associated with the ruling New Patriotic Party.
The Asunafo South MP on Saturday had his home vandalized with at least 3 vehicles severely damaged by the suspects. This is the second time this year that the former Brong Ahafo regional minister’s home is being attacked.
The suspects reportedly seized the vehicle for their operation from a Police patrol team after assaulting the officer who was driving the car.
No arrest has yet been made.
Speaking to Francis Abban on the Morning Starr Tuesday, Mr. Fuseini said the attacks are politically motivated and must be treated as such.
“Any citizen deserves some kind of protection from the land. This was reported before and nothing happened. It has happened again and we expect the police to be very swift in dealing with the case. Hon. Opoku will still function as an MP. The NPP guys shouldn’t think they can intimidate anybody ahead of the 2020 elections.
“If the police fails to protect the citizens, people may want to take measures to protect themselves and that will be dangerous. The police should do their best to protect the citizenry. Lawlessness seems to be overwhelming our security of today,” he said.
Reacting to the incident, the Brong Ahafo regional minister Asomah Chremeh said the matter is being investigated and justice will be served.
“I returned from Ivory Coast yesterday and heard of both incidence. If this is indeed true, it is a criminal matter and investigations must be conducted. I am yet to go to the grounds to know what has happened so far. I have been briefed by the security in the area on arrival from Ivory Coast”.
Meanwhile, the Brong Ahafo regional Police PRO Augustine Oppong said officers have been dispatched to the area to investigate the incident.
“We have sent some men on the ground to gather intelligence which will help the police and lead to the arrest of the perpetrators. We have not been able to arrest anyone yet in these cases”.
