Free SHS policy to improve Ghana’s literacy level

Deputy Minister of Education, Mr Osei Yaw Adutwum says the implementation of the free senior high school was a deliberate policy by the government to improve the literacy level amongst the citizenry.

He said the nation had no choice but to move on that tangent to train and build the kind of skilled human resources needed to speed up her socio-economic development to meet the aspirations of the people.

Developing the human capital base of every nation, he noted, was the basis for wealth creation and poverty alleviation, and cited how some countries such as South Korea had adhered to this paradigm for their own benefit.

Mr Adutwum, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bosomtwe, was speaking at a fund-raising ceremony, organised by authorities of the Beposo Junior High School (JHS) to solicit funds to rehabilitate the school and expand its infrastructure.



Facilities urgently required by the school include; an administration block, library, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre and staff bungalows.

The Deputy Minister indicated that plans were far advanced by government to rehabilitate all dilapidated school facilities across the country to enhance smooth academic work.

‘It is our determination to bring to standard school infrastructure at the basic level, especially in deprived communities in the country as this was key to the delivery of quality education’, he said.

Mr. Simon Osei-Mensah, Ashanti Regional Minister, advised Beposo residents living abroad to contribute in cash and kind towards the achievement of the project.

Nana Asare Appiah, Nkosuohene of Beposo, said rehabilitation of the school would help expand the facilities to increase enrolment of pupils.
