MOHAMED ELNENY could miss the rest of the season despite receiving an injury boost.
Elneny was forced in the first half of Arsenal’s 4-1 win over West Brom after landing awkwardly following a challenge with Mark Noble.
After the match, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger expressed his concern that the midfielder could be out for an extended period.
“Unfortunately it doesn’t look too good,” Wenger said. “He has an X-ray, but I don’t know how bad it is. But it doesn’t look too good.”
It could have been a bitter blow for Elneny, with the World Cup just two months away.
But Egyptian national team assistant manager Mahmoud Fayez has revealed scans showed the injury was not serious – and that Elneny will only be on the sidelines for three weeks.
Fayez tweeted: “I just contacted Elneny after he finished his X-ray and thankfully his injury is not serious and he will be out of action for three weeks.
“He will join us in the World Cup.”
Arsenal then confirmed Elneny had sustained ligament damage to his left ankle but are hopeful he will be available again this season.
It means Elneny will miss the Europa League semi-final against Atletico Madrid and potentially Arsenal’s last four league games.
Should Arsenal beat Atletico, Elneny will face a race to be fit for the final on May 16.
The 25-year-old will then be hopeful of being fit enough to make Egypt’s squad for the World Cup, which starts on June 14.
