Mahama got facts wrong in 30% Free SHS payment claim – MoE

The Ministry of Education has dismissed claims by former President John Dramani Mahama that only 30 percent of the funds meant for the first-year implementation of the Free Senior High School programme has been paid by the government.

Mr. Mahama during the first National Conference of Ex-MMDCEs of the National Democratic Congress said: “It’s like the government is just, as I said, ‘Governance-As-You-Go’, ad hoc decisions, all the initiatives like free SHS, no policy guideline, and, as of now, the information we have is that for the first year, only 30 per cent of the money that should have been paid to the schools has been paid, 70 per cent has not been paid.”

But a statement by the Education Ministry stated that the former President got his facts all wrong.

The ministry in clarifying the issue stated the “Government, through the Ministry of Education, makes 79.5% central payments and only 20.5% are paid directly to the schools.”

The Ministry also gave a breakdown on how the money for the Free SHS policy was distributed by the government.

Below is the full statement
