‘VAR is bulls***!’ Morocco star Nordin Amrabat slams officials over Spain goal controversy

WORLD CUP organisers have been slammed by Morocco star Nordin Amrabat after Spain benefitted from VAR decisions on Monday night.
Morocco were just minutes away from a famous victory over Spain, even though they were already eliminated from the World Cup.

But Iago Aspas popped up with a dramatic goal in stoppage time to secure a 2-2 draw and Spain’s place in the last-16.

Amrabat was clearly furious after the game and as the TV camera focused in on him on the pitch he gestured a box sign – the movement referees do for a VAR decision – before mouthing “bulls***” at the camera.

Morocco end their World Cup campaign with the solitary point picked up against a Spain side that struggled to dispatch the north African outfit.

And pundit Leon Osman wasn’t impressed by Fernando Hierro’s men.

“Morocco were excellent, great performance from them,” he told the BBC.

“To show the weaknesses in Spain’s team and really go at it, they could have won the game, they are unlucky not to.

“Spain, 90 seconds from an embarrassing result, have ended up winning the group.”

Morocco manager Herve Renard said: “This World Cup has been an exceptional experience.

“I came here to learn and we have learned a great deal over the three matches.

“We would have loved to have gone into the next round but we should be proud of what we have done and what we have achieved.”

Spain will play hosts Russia in the last-16 stage of the World Cup, while Group B rivals Portugal progress to face Uruguay.

Portugal VAR controversy

Portugal were also lucky to get the rub of the green on VAR decisions on Monday night.

Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded a penalty early in the second half, which was saved.

The Real Madrid star also risked being sent off for an altercation with Morteza Pouraliganji – but after a review he was given only a yellow card.

However, it was not all good news for Portugal as Iran earned an injury-time penalty following a handball in the box – picked up on VAR and dispatched by Alireza Jahanbakhsh.

Shearer fumes at VAR

BBC pundit Alan Shearer was fuming when discussing VAR across both games after full time.

“Farcical. Shambolic. The referee is a very lucky guy. If Iran score at the end it would have been absolute chaos,” he said.

“How on earth can he think that is a penalty? If he thinks it is deliberate handball, he is crazy.

“There is no way on earth that is deliberate handball. It turns the game into an absolute farce.”
