The People of Akropong in the Eastern Region woke up on Sunday 1st July, 2018 to find that the car of Nana Nketiaa Obuo II, Akuapem Queenmother, had been burnt by miscreants in the wee hours of Sunday.
Gangs operating in the community have been blamed for the attack on the Queenmother’s car, which occurred a day after she celebrated one year of her enthronement.
The suspected arsonists, doused the Honda CRV 2009 Model with registration number ER 1604-17 with petrol before setting it alight.
The torchers left behind a gallon containing petrol, according to reports.
The incident has attracted a storm of criticism from indigenes of Akropong, who believe the attack could heighten tension in the community.
According to reports, the culprits boarded a taxi to the residence of the Queenmother to carry out the sinister act to satisfy their paymasters.
Though the motive of the arsonists remained unclear, some residents have linked it to the on-going chieftaincy dispute between the faction of Nana Obuobi Atiemo II and Nana Kwadwo Kesse.
The people of Akropong believe that the fight that ensued between a young man connected to the Akropong Baamuhene, who is known to be a key supporter of Nana Kwadwo Kesse and another supporter of Nana Obuobi Atiemo II was the prelude to the arson attack.
There have been many instances where some prominent chiefs have been mercilessly beaten by some miscreants allegedly connected to Nana Kwadwo Kesse, but no action has been taken because of their political connections and affiliations of the people involved in the crime.
Against that backdrop, the people of Akropong are calling on the security agencies to, as a matter of urgency, clampdown on the perpetrators of the despicable act before matters get out of hand.
