Fast-track approval of university fees – Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has called on Parliament to expedite action on the passage of the 2018/2019 academic year fees for tertiary institutions across the country.

According to him, delays in approving the fees will disrupt activities on the academic calendar of universities.

Speaking at the 10th Graduation Ceremony of the George Grant University of Mines and Technology at Tarkwa in the Western Region, former president Kufuor, who is also the chancellor of the university appealed to the government “through the ministry of education to as a matter of urgency get parliament to approve the 2018/2019 academic year fees.”

“This will enable universities to seamlessly fulfill their obligations in order to continue with their mandate of teaching, research and extension services, and for the smooth running of the 2019/2019 academic year.”

The delay on the part of parliament to approve the fees, Citi News understands is causing anxiety in the university communities across the country.

The Academic Facility User Fee universities charge, for example, has not been increased in the past two years. Other subventions from the government are also not released on time.

The result is that while some infrastructural projects in some universities have stalled, others have been abandoned due to lack of funds.

A quick consideration and approval of the 2018/2019 fees will help avoid disruptions in the academic year.
