MANCHESTER UNITED legend Gary Neville has appeared to hit out at his former club using a six-year-old tweet.
Manchester United appear increasingly likely to end the transfer window without adding any new players to the early arrivals of Diogo Dalot, Fred and Lee Grant.
Manager Jose Mourinho has been vocal throughout the summer about the need to strengthen the United squad but is set for disappointment.
United’s failure to make additions has led to criticism from some pundits and with just a few hours left in the window, Neville retweeted a critical tweet posted in August 2012.
On deadline day, Neville wrote on Twitter: “What the transfer deadline gives you is a clear indication of which are the badly run football clubs!!!”
And given the timing of the retweet, it appears Neville was making a pointed analysis of Mourinho and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.
United fans were also quick to assume Neville was digging at his former club.
“Is that a dig at Mr Woodward & The Glazers?” replied one fan.
“Are @ManUtd part of that now Gary?” another said.
A third supporter said: “United top of that pile, I hope there’s some serious fan backlash after this, Mou may be playing poor football but no manager can be expected to do a job without backing from the board.”
Earlier today, Neville had predicted United would make three new signings before the 5pm deadline, tweeting: “It’s #DeadlineDay! Watch it all unfold on Sky Sports News! United are gonna buy 3!!!”
However, speaking at his pre-match media briefing today, Mourinho revealed he is not thinking about the transfer window because no new players will be arriving.
He told reporters: “I’m not confident and the market closes today.
“So it’s time – at least for me – to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed, so I will have to focus on the players I have in relation to this first couple of matches.
”Maybe [it’s] three matches because, after Spurs, there is [an] international break. It gives us a couple of weeks to recover people and to prepare people better and to focus on the players that are available.
