Busing of ministers a sign of indiscipline – Kwesi Aning

Dr. Emmanuel Kwesi Aning, Head of the Department of Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), says the President busing ministers to tour the Ashanti Region highlights the level of indiscipline in Ghana.

President Akufo-Addo during his recent official visit to the Ashanti Region conveyed his ministers and other appointees who wish to accompany him on tours state-owned STC bus.

This directive has put an end to long Presidential convoys which accompanies the President every time he travels.

Dr. Kwesi Aning explained that the late President Atta Mills during his tenure also bussed ministers to a program but the initiative was short-lived since it could not be sustained.

He was speaking with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive Monday morning.

According to him, the long-term implication of this initiative is how to sustain and stick to it.

Touching on the risk assessment in terms of bussing ministers, Dr. Kwesi Aning, mentioned that this discourse should not be driven by emotions.

“Sometimes in Ghana we do things in a disjointed manner; it is not the rhetoric from people who think they know. Two big buses, nice target. Even if it is not an attack, a big pothole, tire burst, a little accident. Can you imagine the damage to our reputation when it hits social media? I wonder the threats assessment which was made before agreeing to bus these Ministers and appointees,” he said.

He noted that while on the surface, we may save money and not disturb people on the road, there should be the need to calculate the risks and cost of the initiative.
