Don’t grade the road, asphalt it; Nsakina ready for another demo

The Roads Ministry and the Ga West Municipal Assembly have up to next week Monday to ensure the roads in the Ga West area in Accra are fixed or ensure there is significant progress in ensuring same.

In the absence of that, the authorities should be prepared to face another demonstration from the residents of the areas, including Nsakina, Amasaman and Ablekuma.

The residents say they are not ready to tolerate grading of the roads and leaving it at that, since that is what subsequent governments have done in response to demands to have the roads fixed.

These comments come from some residents of Nsakina a day after they staged an iconic demonstration that included blocking of roads and burning tyres, all in an attempt to attract the attention of their representatives.

Few hours after the demonstration, there was a grader on site ready for work. This, however, infuriated the residents who tell Joy News the grading of the road is far from what they want.



“We want the roads asphalted not graded. Anytime we go on demonstration, they just come to grade the road and leave, we won’t accept that this time,” one resident said.

In a letter copied to their Assembly Member, convenors of the demonstration say they will stage another demonstration on Monday October 22 if their concerns are not addressed.

What has the Member of Parliament been saying?

Member of Parliament for Amasaman, Emmanuel Nii Okai Laryea says the Nana Akufo-Addo-led government is to blame for the nature of the roads.

According to him, the erstwhile John Mahama administration had started work on the road before the December 7 elections aftermath. The 22 month-old government according to him, has abandoned the road.

Mr Laryea said according to his enquiries, there are no funds to continue the project. “I have made several attempts to get government to fix the road and it’s fallen on deaf ears,” he told Joy News.
