Fight corruption, nepotism as you promised – Mahama charges Nana Addo

Former President John Mahama has challenged President Akufo-Addo to fight corruption and deal with nepotism in his government as he promised ahead of winning the 2016 elections.

He said Nana Addo must also ensure prosecution of all alleged cases of corruption within his government.

John Mahama, who is preparing to return as president accused Akufo-Addo of superintending over “incidences of corruption and nepotism of historic proportions.”

He said such events happening under the government was a deviation from the values of December 31 revolution that saw many sacrificing their lives for the purpose.

In a Facebook post to commemorate the 31st December revolution, John Mahama said although past leaders of the country strived to ensure probity and accountability, recent developments within the Akufo-Addo government appears to be eroding all the gains.

Read his full statement below:

31st December marks a pivotal period in our national life.

It is a day, which reminds Ghanaians of the period in our history, which eventually birthed the Fourth Republican Democracy.

On this day, I commend President Jerry John Rawlings, cadres of the revolution, members of the NDC and all Ghanaians for our collective sacrifices made towards our enduring democracy.

Notwithstanding the fact that Ghana’s journey towards sustainable democracy witnessed regrettable and turbulent occurrences, the principles of probity, transparency and accountability were established and have endured almost four decades after.

Sadly, the recent upsurge in incidences of corruption and nepotism of historic proportions under the current administration, are a clear deviation from the revolutionary values for which people laid down their lives.

Consistent with the spirit of the 37th Anniversary of the 31st December Revolution, I urge President Akufo-Addo to give meaning to his pledge to fight corruption and nepotism by investigating and prosecuting the many allegations made against his appointees.

I wish all comrades a reflective and solemn anniversary.

President Akufo-Addo’s government has been hit by several allegations of corruptions some of which has been investigated, and according to President Akufo-Addo have been found to be baseless.

About the 31st December Revolution

On 31st December 1981, former President Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings led a group of soldiers to topple the late President Hilla Liman’s government to form the Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC).

The PNDC was an amalgamation of the Armed Forces Revolution Council (AFRC) which on 4th June 1978, deposed the Supreme Military Council (SMC) II, and handed over power to Liman’s government after elections.

The PNDC steered the affairs of the country until 1992 when the country was returned to constitutional democracy.
