PETR CECH has announced he will retire from professional football at the end of the season and the Arsenal star has revealed the reason behind his decision.
Cech, 36, released a statement on Twitter on Tuesday morning confirming this will be the final campaign of his 20-year career.
“This is my 20th season as a professional player and it has been 20 years since I signed my first professional contract, so it feels like the right time to announce that I will retire at the end of this season,” it read.
“Having played 15 years in the Premier League, and won every single trophy possible, I feel like I have achieved everything I set out to achieve.
“I will continue to work hard at Arsenal to hopefully win one more trophy this season, then I am looking forward to seeing what life holds for me off the pitch.”
Cech’s decision to call it quits comes off the back of trophy-laden spell in England which began when he joined Chelsea in 2004.
The goalkeeper was a vital part of Jose Mourinho’s defensively resilient side which won back-to-back Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006.
Those top-flight triumphs were repeated in 2010 and 2015, while he also helped secure nine more pieces of domestic silverware while at Stamford Bridge.
Cech was in goal for Chelsea on the most famous night in their history as they beat Bayern Munich in the 2012 Champions League final.
The following season the former Czech Republic international, who won 124 caps, started as the Blues beat Benfica in the Europa League final.
Cech left Chelsea for London rivals Arsenal in 2015 having been dislodged by Thibaut Courtois.
He won the third Community Shield of his career that summer, adding another two years later following the Gunners’ FA Cup final glory.
Cech made 103 Premier League appearances across his first three seasons at the Emirates.
