ABL launches Club 5 on 5 amateur football tournament

Accra Brewery Limited (ABL), producer of Club Beer, has launched the maiden five-a-side amateur football tournament.

Dubbed the Club 5 on 5, the tournament is part of the African zone’s football activation, with eight other countries in the ABInBev Africa family aimed at strengthening current friendships and starting new ones.

The winning team will represent Ghana in the continental competition in Tanzania in June.

The tournament is open to only amateur teams of five players and will be executed in 500 selected outlets across the country for both male and female teams.

Addressing the launch in Accra last Monday, the Country Director of ABL, Shaun Raposo, explained that elimination matches would be organised in April at the local community level, through to the regional level and national final until a winning team emerges.

He added that the winning team would be the pride of Ghana and would represent the country in the continental tournament in Tanzania. The African champions, he noted, would get the opportunity to travel to Europe for an ultimate football experience.

“This is a competition we decided to bring up to help unearth talents for the future and we believe investing in the future talents will go a long way to help nurture their talents,” he added.

For her part, the Marketing Manager of ABL, Ewurafua Addo-Atuah, said she was hopeful that the competition had come to stay and noted that it would help bring out the best in the young ones.

She said it was the belief of her outfit that the tournament would add up to Club’s exceptional legacy as Ghana’s quintessential beer with the emergence of the competition.

Meanwhile, former Black Stars and Black Queens players, namely — John Paintsil, Laryea Kingston, Sam Johnson, Augustine Ahinful and Memunatu Sulemana —threw their weight behind the competition and thrilled fans in an exhibition match against a selected side from Kotobabi as a curtain-raiser for the tournament.
