I slapped a ‘trotro’ driver for over-speeding – Allotey Jacobs reveals

Bernard Allotey Jacobs , former Central Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has revealed that he once slapped a commercial bus driver for over-speeding.

According to him, the bad habit of some Ghanaians keeping quite in public transport, popularly known as ‘trotro’, when drivers are misbehaving on the road has been a major factor fueling road carnage in the country.

He made the comment when discussing the incessant carnage on Ghanaian roads which claimed over 60 lives last week.

Mr Jacobs explained that, he picked an Urvan bus from Cape Coast to Accra, but the speed with which the driver was travelling was unbearable.

He noted that not even the pleas from the passengers got the driver to reduce his speed. He, thus, had no option than to slap him.

“I was sitting at the back but managed to come to the front and gave him a dirty slap. Though some passengers opposed it, it got him to slow down,” he stated.

The former NDC Chairman bemoaned the attitude of some passengers who insult other messengers who speak against careless driving.

“It is unfortunate, passengers are not united, they are divided; everyone with his own mind but we shouldn’t sit aloof, it will happen to your family member, wife or child if you don’t talk about it,” he observed.

He urged the police to ensure any driver who survives an accident is taken through psychological examination and also punished to serve as a deterrent to others.
