A five (5) week-old baby has been rescued by the Police officers from the Koforidua Central Police Station after he was abandoned on the street by the unknown mother.
The infant believed to have been abandoned around 10 pm at the Traffic light close to the Eastern Regional Hospital was heard crying by passers-by.
Upon receipt of the information, the Station Officer, Chief Inspector Ebenezer Sakyi dispatched officers to the scene to rescue the baby boy and send him to the Regional Hospital for Medical attention.
A source at the Hospital told Starr News that the baby is healthy. Processes are underway to hand him over to the Social Welfare department.
Meanwhile, the Police has commenced investigations into the incident to apprehend the suspect.
According to DOVVSU, a total of 31, 480 children were abandoned and neglected by their parents and guardians across the country from 2011 and 2017.
Infant abandonment is a criminal offence under the Section -96 of the Criminal Offences Act of Ghana and the Children Act 1998.
