Former MPs need pension scheme – Speaker

Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Ocquaye, has called for the establishment of a pension scheme for former Members of Parliament.

The call comes on the back of the death of a former majority leader Dr Kwabena Adjei.

“Honourable members it is important for us to seriously consider matters relating to former members of the House,” Professor Ocquaye told MPs on Thursday during parliamentary proceedings.

He said the lives of many former lawmakers “are not as we would like to see and in fact, it pains me personally to see how we look like after we have served and people think these are people who are making money in this House.”

“People don’t have money here and people are not about money here. See the other members of Parliament who have left recently…we must look at the reality and make provisions for pensions and other aspects of the welfare of honourable members.”

Dr Adjei who was also the former National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) died on March 12.

He was 76-years-old.

While eulogizing the late NDC Chairman, MP for Pusiga Laadi Ayamba questioned her colleagues for abandoning the late Biakoye MP during his sick days.
