AFCON 2019: Meet the seven legends picked by CAF as ambassadors

The Confederation of Africain Football (CAF) has picked seven legends as the Africa Cup of Nations 2019 ambassadors. 

The confederations picked Yaya Toure, Didier Drogba (Both  of Ivory Coast), Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon), Mahmoud El-Khateeb (Egypt),

Others picked are Rabah Madjer (Algeria), Nwankwo Kanu (Nigeria) and El Hadji Diouf (Senegal), and will be in Egypt to represent the confederations for the tournament that start on 21st June.

1. Yaya Toure

The former Manchester City and Barcelona star was African Footballer of the Year in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and won the Africa Cup of Nations title in 2015.

2. Didier Drogba

The Chelsea legend was in the CAF Team of the Year in 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2012, and was the African Footballer of the Year in 2006 and 2009. He is also Ivory Coast’s all-time top goalscorer with 65 strikes.



3. Samuel Eto’o

The Cameroonian starred for his country, Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Chelsea in his prime years, and was African player of the year in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2010. He is also AFCON’s all-time top goal-scorer, won the Olympic Gold medal in 2000, the Africa Cup of Nations in the same year and 2002.

4. Rahab Madjer

The Algerian legend was the African Footballer of the Year in 1987. He was also named Algerian footballer of the 20th century: 2009. He was also the Best Player of the Africa Cup of Nations in1990.

5. Mahmoud El-Khateeb

He was in the Africa Cup of Nations Dream team in 1980, Africa footballer of the year in 1983 and won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1986.

6. Nwankwo Kanu

The Nigerian won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 1993, the Olympic Gold Medal in 1996, the Afro-Asian Cup of Nations in 1995 and was the African Footballer of the year in 1996 and 1999.

7. El Hadji Diouf

The Senegalese star was named in the FIFA World Cup all-star team in 2002 and was the African Player of the Year in 2001 and 2002.
