Registration of mobile phones soon – Ursula

The government has announced plans to commence registration of both new and used mobile phones in the country in a bid to reduce cyber-crime and related illegal activities.

According to Communication Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, a proposal to that effect has been presented to cabinet for approval by end of the year.

Speaking to Class News, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful said the measures when rolled out will go a long way to deter and reduce increasing cyber-crime.

The Ablekuma West lawmaker said: “For some of these devices that already have preloaded apps that have been recognised as malware those will be in that data base and so we will be able to recognise that these kinds of devices are bad for your country because they are collecting the information of users without their permission so then we can be able to block those devices and take them out of the system and educate people about the need to only use authorised devices.

She also added that the Ministry will soon open tender for interested firms to bid for the contract.
