Actor John Dumelo has expressed joy with the decision by Ghana’s parliament to shelve the idea of constructing a new 450-seat chamber.
Ghanaians, especially on Social media – Facebook and Twitter – strongly kicked against the $200-million project.
Some lawmakers, especially from the Minority side, like the Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa; Ras Mubarak, MP for Kumbungu; and Tamale North MP Alhassan Suhuyini, described the move as needless.
Also, some lawmakers from the Majority side, including Samuel Ayeh-Paye, Ayensuano; and Mr Patrick Boamah, Okaikwei Central, also said a new chamber is not necessary.
After a series of consultations, Parliament, in a statement released on Monday, 8 July 2019, said: “The board, has, upon reviewing presentations made to it by well-meaning Ghanaians, has accordingly, taken the development out of its present agenda.”
Reacting to Parliament’s U-turn on the matter, Mr Dumelo tweeted: “I’m glad parliament has finally decided to drop the chamber. Well done to the millions of voices out there who fought for this. Together, let us make Ghana a better place.”
