Women’s AFCON: CAF Increases Number From 8 To 12

The Confederation of African Football has announced its decision to increase the number of participating teams at the Women’s Africa  Cup of Nations from eight to 12 teams, according to reports.

CAF President Ahmad Ahmad confirmed the change on the social media after Wednesday’s meeting of the Executive Committee.

“With @CAF_Online’s #exco, we took a great decision today: feminine’s #AFCON will now engage 12 teams! They only were 8 until now. #CAF #Football,” reads a tweet on Ahmad’s Twitter handle.

The last  Women’s Africa Cup of Nations was held last year in Ghana with Nigeria emerging as Champions for the 11th time after beating South Africa 4-3 on penalties.

This development also comes one year after the decision to expand the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the men from 16 to 24 teams which has done well at the ongoing tournament in Egypt which will end on Friday.

However, the search for the host nation of the 2020 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations continues following Congo’s decision to pull out of the tournament hosting last week.
