MAN FINED GH¢600 FOR SANITATION INDISCIPLINE

The Abeka District Court has fined a man GH¢600 for accumulation of refuse in containers and on bare ground exposing residents to health danger.

A resident of Akweteman in the greater Accra Region, an Electoral Area within the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly appeared in the District Court at Fadama on 9th July, 2019 for sanitation indiscipline on bench warrant.

The man Baba Idrisu owns and operates an apartment facility at Akweteyman.

He appeared in court on the offences of Insanitary Frontage and Yard Drain Contrary to Section 56 SS a & b of Act 851, Public Health Act 2012 and  Accumulation of Refuse in containers and on bare ground exposed to flies contrary to the Sanitation  Act.

According to the prosecutor, Madam Delight Dzansi: “A routine inspections conducted on the accused premises by a team of Environmental Health Inspectors on 24th April, 2019, revealed the existence of sanitation offences and as such, the nuisance was brought to the accused attention and summons was later applied for and served on the 24th June, 2019 at which time all the nuisance still exist and in its worst state”.

The accused person pleaded guilty with explanation that: “By then he has travelled and on his return found the place to be in such mess and attributed it to other houses committing the offence”.



Her Worship advised: “that the problem should be investigated thoroughly and report back in court.

The case was adjourned to 23rd July, 2019 and the accused was granted a bail in the sum of GH¢ 5,000 with one surety.

The trial continued on 25th July 29, 2019 at exactly 11.16 a.m.

As per the report after re-inspection by the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly’s Environmental Health Inspectors :“ it was realized that the nuisance was committed by the accused tenants and as such, as at the time of the court proceedings, the accused persons have done the needful”.

“Having done the necessary, the court fined the accused an amount of GH¢600 or in default, three months imprisonment”.
