Energy Uni renaming: Tribal Bigots, we see you! – Presidential Staffer lashes out at critics

A staffer at the Presidency, Charles Nii Teiko Tagoe has lashed out at those criticizing the decision to rename University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Sunyani in the Bono Region after the late Prime Minister of the Second Republic, Professor Kofi Abrefa Busia.

According to him, those persons are tribal bigots tribal bigots questioning the essence of their fuss and needless cacophony.

In a post on his Facebook page sighted by MyNewsGh.com, he said “Why is it that when the same President Akufo-Addo gave approval to renamed the Ho Technical University, which was formerly known as Ho Polytechnic to EPHRAIM AMU TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY, we did not see the same reaction from our petty rabid behind- the-keyboard Facebook activists? Today, a university is about to be renamed after an illustrious son and a former Prime Minister of this country and you ask yourself why the fuss and needless cacophony? Tribal bigots. We see you!”

There have been wide criticisms in the media over the renaming of some tertiary institutions in Ghana after prominent figures following the latest proposition by the governing council of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR).

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the 4th Congregation of the University in Sunyani on Saturday, August 10, 2019 was quoted to have said “Following the decision taken by the University’s Council on August 3, 2018, the university will be named after one of the illustrious sons of the region, Professor K.A Busia after the decision had received Parliamentary approval “, he stated amidst applause.

This comes barely a month after a proposal for the renaming of the Navrongo campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS) after C. K. Tedam, the immediate past Chairman of the Council of Elders of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) who passed on recently.

At the beginning of this month, Parliament passed the University for Business and Integrated Development Studies Bill 2018.

The Bill proposed the name of the institution as S.D. Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies but members on the Majority side of Parliament disagreed.
