Arsene Wenger tells Man Utd they need to sign four players to sort out Solskjaer mess
Arsene Wenger believes Manchester United still have plenty of work to do in the transfer market if they’re to seriously compete again with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.
The Frenchman was watching on as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were held to a 1-1 draw with Rochdale before winning on penalties.
Defeat would have heaped further pressure on the shoulders of the Norwegian after Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at West Ham and therefore he will have been delighted his team booked their place in the hat.
Now Solskjaer has been told he needs to sign four players in order to get where United need to be as they find themselves already way behind Liverpool and Manchester City.
“They need, in my opinion, four first team players,” he said in the BeIN SPORTS studio.
“But around those players, I see a squad that is capable of challenging. They aren’t as far away as people think.
“I cannot name them [the four players]. It would be headlines everywhere. I know them.
“They lack creativity, flair, players that can expose the defence consistently through dribbling ability and speed.
“Now it is too horizontal. Side to side. Backwards.
“Nobody to beat a defender and force chaos, force a one-on-one. They need an overlapping full-back. They need a destroyer. Four players.”
Wenger has been out of a job since finally waving goodbye to Arsenal in May 2018 and he was asked whether managing Manchester United would appeal to him.
“Manchester United is a dream job. For any coach,” he added.
“I have confidence, I have courage, and you’re right, I have ideas.”
United now face Chelsea in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup in a game Solskjaer will be keen to win given their recent troubles.
Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has given the Baby-faced Assassin his backing, claiming he will continue to spend cash.
United are in need of a few new faces in January as they look to freshen up their ranks.
A striker is likely to be high on the agenda following recent events which sees Mason Greenwood as the club’s only recognised centre-forward.
