Government clamps down on fake social media accounts

The Ministry of Information has called on Ghanaians to stop the practice of creating fake social media account of government officials and institutions.

According to the ministry, the fake accounts are created to “promise jobs, scholarships, contracts and senior high school/national service placements.”

Unsuspecting fraud victims, who are desperate to access any of the above-mentioned offers are “lured into making advance cash payments to secure the offers.”

The statement, that was signed by the sector minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said there has been a particular rise in the creation of such fake social media accounts since last August and that Ghanaians should take extra precaution when engaging with “accounts purporting to be those of government officials.”

See below for the full statement from the government:

Be careful of offers that seem too good to be true… Chances are they probably are.
