Minority to block GNPC’s budget over GHc3m donations

Minority to block GNPC’s budget over GHc3m donations

The Minority in Parliament has threatened to block the 2020 budget of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) if it fails to provide a complete breakdown of its projected expenditure.

The threat by the minority follows the approval by the GNPC board to donate over three million cedis to Okyehene, the Rebecca Foundation, EOCO and other organisations.

Speaking to Starr News in Parliament, former deputy Power Minister, John Jinapor, disclosed that the GNPC donation has no parliamentary approval.

The Yapei-Kusagwu MP added the sector minister will be summoned to the floor over the matter arguing that explanations over the 1.5 million allocations to the Okyenhene for tree planting is untenable.

“Certainly, we intend to bring the minister before the House, the minister must come to explain when these protocols were adopted…is it a policy decision of the government that GNPC can engage in these kinds of expenditure. what are the protocols involved, is ot something that has been happening over the years and what can we do to ensure that we streamline the operations.

“If you want to support people, let’s do that in a proper fashion, fair, equitable and in a transparent manner. GNPC itself will be appearing before the committee for approval of the 2020 budget and let me assure you we are not going to take bulk figures…we want to insist that we get details for every expenditure,” Mr Jinapor told Starr News’ Parliamentary correspondent Ibrahim Alhassan.

As part of the donations by the GNPC, an amount of 400, 000.00 was also donated to the 2019 Damba festival while an amount of 50, 000.00 was also donated to the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).

The Ghana Boxing Association also received a donation worth 30, 000.00 dollars. The Rebecca Foundation also received an amount of 120, 000.00 from the GNPC.

The Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) also got a donation of 550, 000.00 Ghana cedis.
