Student sweeps 11 awards at Family Health graduation

A medical student’s outstanding academic performance headlined an impressive ceremony yesterday as he swept 11 of 12 awards at the 2019 graduation event of the Family Health University College.

Simon Sackitey, who was also the former President of the school’s medical association, emerged the overall Best Graduating Student of the medical science class.

He also won the Best Student in Anatomy, Best Student in Pathology, Best Student in Microbiology, Best Student in Physiology and Best Student in Haematology.

A total of 238 students graduated from the school, with 228 students graduating from the Nursing and Midwifery School, and 10 others from the medical class.
The ceremony, attended by families and key players in the health sector, was spiced by cultural display and other dance performances from students of the school.



Passion, zeal

Mr Sackitey stated that it had been his hope to be a doctor since childhood and he was excited he had been able to accomplish the dream.

He added that although being a medical student was very grueling due to the voluminous materials they had to study, he adopted strict time management skills which enabled him to excel in all the courses he offered in the school.

“I am more passionate about being a doctor and I think it is that passion and zeal that led me to continue even when I wanted to compromise. God has also been on my side. He gave me the gift of learning and a very retentive memory which had ensured this success,” Mr Sackitey said.

“Many people argue that the basic sciences are only full of extraneous details and complex pathways. I beg to differ. Anathomy taught me that there is structure to everything. Biochemistry taught me that it is the little things that matter. Pathology taught me that anything can go wrong and Pharmacology also taught me that there is always a fix to each problem, if you think hard enough,” he added.

Advice

The President of the school, Prof. Enyonam Kwawukume, congratulated the graduates and told them they had all pursued a noble cause and had ended it successfully.

He urged them to serve their society and the nation at large with the skill that had been imparted into them and advised them to exhibit their skills with the highest standards of ethics, integrity and compassion whenever they may be called upon to serve.
