Ghanaian fisher folks have called on the National Peace Council (NPC) to call on the Electoral Commission (EC) to rescind on its decision to compile new voters’ register for the 2020 elections.
According to them, most of the fishers will be on fishing expedition outside Ghana from March to August so going ahead to conduct the exercise will mean most of their members would be disenfranchised.
This was made at press conference organized by the fisher folks at Elmina on Wednesday.
The leader of the group, John Quayson popularly known as Maanoma, who addressed the press said the fishers would be compelled to advise themselves should the EC goes ahead to conduct the exercise.
“Our plea to the Peace Council is, they should talk to the Electoral Commission to postpone the registration exercise to next and also make sure enough sensitization is made for all our members to be aware so that they prepare themselves for it,” he said.
According to him, their expedition in other countries had become necessary following the hint that the sea would be closed for two months this year “so we have to go outside for fishing so that we don’t find ourselves wanting during that period….. so we beg the EC to take our plea because after all it is the same register that was used for referendum and the just ended district Assembly elections the EC should hold on and organize it next year,”
Present at the conference were chief fishermen, fishermen, canoe owners and fishmongers from Central and part of Greater Accra and Western Regions of Ghana.
