Chelsea boss Lampard wants two January transfers as stance on signing goalkeeper explained

Chelsea are looking to sign another top class goalkeeper – to challenge for the No. 1 spot with the underperforming Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Chelsea goalkeeper Arrizabalaga came under criticism from manager Frank Lampard for his performance in the disappointing 2-2 draw with Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, and he was blamed by some for Hector Bellerin’s equaliser.

Arrizabalaga, 25, also came in for criticism for his part in the defeat at Newcastle on Saturday.

Chelsea will not sell Arrizabalaga, who they bought for nearly £72 million in 2018, but if they can bring in a new keeper, both would challenge for the No. 1 slot.

Current No.2, Willy Caballero, 38, is out of contract at the end of the season. He will though play in Saturday’s FA Cup fourth round tie at Hull.

Meanwhile, young goalkeeper Jamal Blackman has joined Bristol Rovers on loan.

Lampard earlier this season wanted to bring Shay Given, his goalkeeping coach at Derby last year onto his staff at Stamford Bridge, but was stopped from doing so, with Hilario the current coach.

Lampard is at the moment concentrating his efforts on strikers. Chelsea placed a loan bid in for Paris St Germain’s Edinson Cavani on Wednesday night.

Chelsea have offered to cover the Uruguayan’s £360,000 a week wages and pay a loan fee of £5 million. But PSG want to sell Cavani, who is a free agent at the end of this season, and want a fee of around £15m.

Cavani has already reportedly agreed an 18 month deal with Atletico Madrid.

The striker’s mother Berta Gomez said: “PSG have rejected three proposals from Atletico but my son has asked to leave and we are waiting for an agreement to be reached by both clubs.

‘It’s complicated but he wants to play at Atletico, if not now, then in the summer. ‘We have been wishing it for years.”

Chelsea are still interested in CSKA Moscow’s £20m striker Fyodor Chalov – and Lampard, who wants to strengthen his defence even more urgently now, is also plotting a move for £20 million Atalanta left wing back Robin Gosens.

Gosens, 25, has been one of Atalanta’s stars this season as they have climbed to fifth place in Serie A.

Speaking after Chelsea’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal, Lampard said: “I’m not a massive believer in looking at the age.

“Do we have to have a better shot conversion, yes. I have spoken about that a lot.

“You can’t say we will definitely sign a striker this month but we are looking because there is a fine line in football.

“If you don’t score enough goals then you won’t win enough games.”
