Group pickets at EC offices in Cape Coast

Some members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) last Tuesday picketted at the Central Regional offices of the Electoral Commission (EC) to protest the compilation of a new voters register.

Clad mostly in red, the protesters held placards some of which read “The new register is a waste”, ” we are for peace” “let’s all protect the public purse” and “we need money for roads”.

They met the Central Regional Director of the EC, Mrs Philomena Edusei and presented their grievances to her.

The police were there to ensure the demonstration was peaceful.

No basis

The Central Regional Chairman of the NDC, Mr E. K. T. Addo, said there was no basis for a new voters register.

He said it was only fair the EC took dissenting views on the new register into consideration.

“We are Ghanaians and we have the right to protest this waste,” he said.

He said it was not right to allocate so much into a new register when the government still owed many communities essential infrastructure such as roads and hospitals.

Peaceful

Mrs Edusei thanked the protesters for the peaceful manner in which they conducted themselves.

She said their grievances and petitions would be forwarded to the head office in Accra.
