It has come to light that some lecturers in various public universities across the country have been beneficiaries of Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETfund) scholarships.

The lecturers were mainly sponsored to pursue doctorate of philosophy degrees in various fields across the globe costing thousands of dollars for several years.

Notable among the beneficiaries is Professor John Gatsi of the University of Cape Coast and Justice Srem-Sai of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

Professor John Gatsi is reported to have secured the scholarship to pursue a PhD in Finance (through Distance Learning) at the SMC University in Switzerland while Justice Srem-Sai, Law Lecturer at GIMPA used the scholarship funds to pursue a PhD in Law at the University of Leeds in the UK.

John Gatsi, widely considered as a staunch member of opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), is rumoured to be in the race to become running mate of former President John Dramani Mahama for the upcoming 2020 presidential election.

Even though the Ghana Education Trust Fund(GETfund) Scholarships are meant primarily for needy but brilliant students the law provides for it to award scholarships to persons who may not necessarily but brilliant and needy but are deserving of the scholarship according to other provisions set out in the act establishing the fund.

Even so the moral question remains whether lecturers should be sponsored even though there exist thousands of qualified needy but brilliant students who get denied the scholarships.
