Parliament approves GHC1.2b covid-19 package

The Finance Committee of Parliament has granted request by finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta to spend over GHC1.2 billion from the contingency fund in government’s fight against Covid-19.

The approval was done by consensus in spite of reservations by Minority.

Explaining the breakdown to the House, the finance minister said GHC280 million will be spent on food packages and hot meals while GHC40 million be given to the National Buffer Stock Company. He further noted additional ¢200 million will be used to cater for bills on water and sanitation and ¢241 will cover tax waiver for health personnel.



Furthermore, he said GHC80 million will be spent on the allowance for health staff. Two million will be used to cover transportation for health workers and GHC600 million will be disbursed as soft loans to businesses.

COVID-19 cases in Ghana have hit 313 after 26 new cases were recorded on Wednesday, April 8.

According to the GHS, the new cases are from the enhanced contact tracing and testing ongoing.

So far a total of 313 cases of COVID-19 with six (6) deaths have been recorded.

The regional distribution of the cases are as follows: Greater Accra Region has most cases (274) followed by the Ashanti Region (25), Northern Region (10), Upper West Region (1), Eastern Region (1), Upper East Region (1) and Central Region (1).
