COVID-19: Day students to be accepted as boarders – NAPO

The Minister for Education Mathew Opoku Prempeh has stated that all-day students in Senior High Schools that have boarding facilities will now be accepted as boarders when schools reopen on June 22, 2020.

According to the minister, this is to prevent day students from coming into contact with people infected with COVID-19 which can lead to a spike in cases in the schools.

He also stated that students on the Gold track will be in school for 6 weeks to complete their semester.

Addressing a press conference in Accra, on Tuesday, The Minister who doubles as the Member of Parliament for the Manhyia constituency in the Ashanti Region said: ”All day students will be accepted in Boarding facilities of all senior high schools which has the boarding facilities.”

The Minister added that senior high schools without boarding facilities would also adhere to all social distancing directives.



Parents and guardians will also not be allowed to visit their children when school finally resumes for final year Senior High School students on June 22.

According to him, the move is to ensure that children who are being protected in the various Senior High Schools from the COVID-19 are not allowed to come into contact with parents who may have contracted the virus.

Meanwhile, Junior High School students will be in schools for 11 weeks as they prepare to write their final exams.

“All students will be provided with facemask and hand sanitizers,” he said.
