Accra Floods: Sanitation agencies scratching the surface – GAMA-WASH

Sanitation agencies tasked to ensure planning and enforcement of sanitation laws including the Municipal Assemblies in the capital city are merely scratching the surface preventing flooding, Project Coordinator for the GAMA-WASH project Engineer George Asiedu has said.

According to him, those in charge of communities and municipalities must do more to stem the tide.

He said Odor drain which is a major drainage system in the capital, and the cause of major floods, has not been desilted the whole of the year after the contract for the agency responsible expired.

About six lives were lost to floods in Accra Tuesday following hours of rainfall.

Speaking to Francis Abban on the Morning Starr, the engineer said: “You do not need the president to come and do it. We still have a lot to do and it needs commitment, it needs planning, enforcement of laws before we even think of the money.

The host asked, “somebody is employed to do that job, are they doing right by us in doing that job?” Mr Asiedu responded saying, “I think they are scratching the surface, they are doing very little, and I think a lot needs to be done.”

He went on “they are doing something but not much. A lot needs to be done to ensure that whatever they are supposed to do, they do it within their communities and enforce the laws and ensure that people abide by the rules and regulations within these communities”.
