Doctors, Nurses buying PPE; Probe distribution – A/R GMA chairman to Akufo-Addo

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo, has called on President Akufo-Addo to immediately probe the distribution of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to health facilities in the region.

According to Dr Baidoo, healthcare workers in the region have resorted to purchasing their own PPE to take care of patients as the ones being distributed by the government never get to the facilities.

Speaking on the Morning Starr on Wednesday, Dr Baidoo said the health facilities in the region are gradually getting overwhelmed with COVID-19 cases.

“I will urge the president to send people to the health facilities. You see, if you talk to the medical directors, if you talk to the regional health or district health directors, they will paint a beautiful picture. But at least we have the BNI, we have the police CID, I will appeal to the president to send these agencies to the facilities, interview the people who work in these facilities, not the administrators, and see the reality on the ground,” Dr Baidoo told Morning Starr host Francis Abban.

He added “I’m sure they will tell the president that look, the PPE that you’ve been promising actually don’t get to the facilities. They are a mirage, they don’t get to the facilities. They will also be told that the healthcare workers are under so much pressure and healthcare workers have got to buy their own mask, gloves to take care of Ghanaians.

“And I will also like to appeal to the president that yes he set up a COVID fund for the country but truly I wonder where those monies are going and things that they claim they distributed, where they are.

“Because the last time I checked, they said they have about 50 billion cedis in the coffers and I’m sure people are still contributing. So I’ll appeal to the president, to as a matter of fact make sure whatever monies there is in the coffers are used to buy the needed PPE for health-workers who are meant to take care of Ghanaians so that we can all be healthy and contribute to the development of Ghana.”
