Over 100 kiosks and structures have been destroyed by fire at a community in Shiashie within the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency in Accra.
The several kiosks gutted by fire reportedly serve as shelter for some squatters who live within the community.
According to eyewitnesses, the cause of the fire is not known but it spread quickly because the kiosks were close to each other which also made it difficult for firefighters to douse the raging fire.
Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress’ parliamentary candidate for the constituency John Dumelo has assured that his outfit will come to the aid of the squatters.
“When I got here there were two fire tenders. 30 minutes after they ordered for about two more. The fire personnel are ensuring that things are under control. A number of people have provision shops here. As for the businesses, I’m sure about 40 small scale businesses might have been affected. Personal belongings have also been lost. It’s a sad day for Shiashie.”
In a related development a warehouse and other properties close to the central business district in Takoradi have been razed down by fire, destroying dozens of properties.
According to some eyewitness accounts, the cause of the fire, which started around 1 am on Saturday, August 15 is yet to be established.
Empire News’ Emmanuel Ohene-Gyan reports that the warehouse which is close to the UBA Bank market circle branch belongs to a popular supermarket in Takoradi.
The eyewitness further added that a radio station and other shops operating in the area have all been affected by the ravaging fire.
