I’m not guilty – Fake lawyer tells court, remanded into police custody

The alleged fake lawyer Dennis Benson Seyram who has been arraigned for impersonating as a lawyer in the Volta secessionists case has pleaded not guilty at the Kaneshie District Court in Accra.

Seyram, has been slapped with six charges three each of defrauding by false pretence and deceit of court by impersonation.

The Kaneshie Court Magistrate, Her Worship Rosemond Agyiri Doudua has, however, remanded him into police custody to reappear on January 4, 2021.

In court on Tuesday, the prosecution said the accused person has appeared before Circuit Court judges Emmanuel Esaandoh, Rosemary Baah Tosu and Ama Adoma Kwakye, a magistrate at the Kaneshie District Court.

While praying for bail for his client, lawyer Redford Nii Nortey Lokko said his client is single but has persons within his family to stand sureties for him.

ASP Sylvester Asare for prosecution opposed to the bail application and said the accused person will interfere with witnesses should he be granted bail.

He argued that when granted bail the accused will tamper with their investigation and prayed that he be remanded into police custody to assist the police.

The court after listening to the parties refused the bail application and remanded the accused person to reappear on January 4, 2020.

Brief facts

The brief facts from the prosecution were that, preliminary investigations revealed that Dennis Benson Seyram, suspect is a farmer and also a member of a secessionist group namely, Western Togoland Restoration Front (WTRF).

According to the prosecution, sometime in September, 2020, a group of the said WTRF were arrested various offences including treason felony.

The prosecution, said that since the arrested of the accused persons in secessionists cases in Accra and subsequent arraignment before court in Accra, notably the Circuit and the District Courts, the accused has been involved.

According to prosecution The suspect herein was mostly seen fully robbed among the defence team of the secessionists group in open court. The demeanor of the suspect both in court and outside court invited the suspicion of the police.

Subsequently, the prosecution, said the police begun to investigate whether or not the suspect is a lawyer. Thus, preliminary investigations by the police confirmed that suspicion as correct.

“Consequently, on December 17, 2020, the suspect was arrested at the Kaneshie District Court, in Accra when he appeared fully robbed before the court, announced himself as the counsel for the accused persons thereon.

prosecution said further investigations revealed that the suspect lives in Aflao in the Volta Region and he mostly appeared in courts in Accra including the Circuit courts representing accused persons.
