Affordable Housing: Government to include use of plastic waste materials

Minister for Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye has assured of government’s active collaboration with the private sector to construct low-cost housing for Ghanaians.

The Minister made this known when he paid a working visit to Nelson Boateng and his team at Nelplast Ghana Limited, processors of plastic waste materials for construction of housing units at competitive prices.

The units, made up of plastic waste materials and sand is the first of its kind in the country and contains over 70% of local building materials.

“This falls in line with our policy to prioritize the use of local building materials in the provision of safe, decent and affordable housing for Ghanaians, especially for low and medium-income earners”, Hon. Asenso-Boakye.

He emphasized that government will actively collaborate with the manufacturer and other private sector partners by providing the needed support and enabling environment for mass production of such housing units which are relatively lower in terms of cost.

“I find this initiative highly commendable especially in the wake of recent hikes in prices of imported building materials”, he said.

The Minister added that while this initiative will largely help in providing jobs for more Ghanaians, it will also address issues of poor disposal of plastic waste in the country.

Managing Director for Nelplast Ghana, Nelson Boateng expressed his appreciation for the Minister’s visit and added that with support from the Ministry, Nelplast can provide more of such units to address the housing deficit.
