Agona East MP launches health scheme

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona East in the Central Region, Mrs Queenstar Maame Pokuah Sawyerr, has launched a health scheme to bring healthcare delivery to the doorstep of the constituents.
The scheme, dubbed “Maame Pokuah Health Scheme” (MPHS), is geared towards improving the health needs of the constituents in particularly hard-to-reach communities and villages in the constituency.

A key component of the health scheme is that a mobile van with a dispensary attached to it with two doctors and two nurses on board will be visiting the constituents to provide health services to the people.

With financial support from partners both home and abroad, the MP will foot the medical bills of constituents who will be diagnosed of serious ailments and referred to health facilities to receive medical attention.

The well-attended ceremony was graced by many high-profile personalities within the NDC, including the party’s 2020 running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang; the National Chairman, Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo; the Deputy General
Secretary, Madam Barbara Serwaa Asamoah, and the Deputy Director of Communications of NDC, Ms Obuobia Darko-Opoku.

Priority

At the ceremony, Mrs Sawyerr indicated that her topmost priority in her third term as MP for the area was to provide quality healthcare services to the constituents.

She noted that due to poverty and the deprived nature of the constituency, many people were unable to travel long distances to access health services, which often resulted in preventable deaths and other health complications.

Mrs Sawyerr entreated the people to take full advantage of the scheme to improve upon their health status at no cost to them.

Not politic

Mrs Sawyerr admonished the people to put politics aside since the election was over and support the health scheme to succeed since it had come to provide health care to all residents irrespective of their party affiliations.

“We should not allow extreme partisanship to prevent genuine efforts by people aimed at improving the living conditions of the people,” she said, noting that “as MP, I am committed to ensuring that people in the constituency receive quality health care”.

Bold initiative

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang commended the MP for the bold initiative to address the health needs of the people in the area, saying, “Improving the health conditions of the citizenry is very important towards the growth and development of the country.”

She admitted that many people in rural communities faced difficulties in their quest to access basic health care.

“Obviously, residents of this constituency will heave a sigh of relief with the launch of the health scheme as access to primary health care has been brought closer to them,” she indicated.

For his part, Mr Ampofo commended the MP for prioritising the health of the people, stressing that “providing health services to particularly people in deprived areas is the best thing an MP can offer his or her constituents”.

The Omanhene of the Agona Nsaba Traditional Area, Osabarima Bishop Boappiah Afriyie II, advised the people to depoliticise the initiative and ensure that it served the purpose for which it had been instituted.
