Atimpoku R/C basic school closed over shit bombing

Roman Catholic Basic School in Atimpoku, the district capital of Asuogyaman in the Eastern Region has been closed down for a week over shit bombing by unscrupulous individuals.

Teachers in the school say they will resume academic work only after raft measures are instituted by the community to permanently address the chronic act.

Teachers have complained many times to the community leaders and the Ghana Education Service directorate in the District but no pragmatic measures have been put in place to stop the act.

The last straw that has broken the camel’s back is last Monday’s shit bombing which made teachers and pupils stranded for hours leading to spontaneous closure of the school.

Chiefs and Elders in Atimpoku community together with the chairman of the Parents Teachers Association held a crunch meeting on the matter and agreed to the closure of the school.

The chairman of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) Gideon Clade, said a proposal has been made for levying of parents to hire night watchmen for the school.

“Our decision now is to levy parents to enable us get a watchman for the school who we will pay monthly remuneration. This problem has existed for long. We similarly went in for a watchman but the man was truant so we terminated his appointment. We will convene a PTA meeting to table before parents this proposal. We have closed down this school because nobody can learn in such shit bombed environment they will even get sick so it is better to close down the school to address the issues first”.

The Chief of Atimpoku, Nana Kwaku Budu Akomea, also stated that community meeting will be held on Sunday for the community to discuss the situation and its ramification on education for a lasting solution.

“This problem has been with us for a long time so on Sunday, we are going to meet the entire community to find solution to the problem. We have noticed that they don’t have security in the school also there is no streetlight there. The teachers will also come to the meeting so hopefully Monday the school will be reopened. We will deal with anyone found culpable to serve as deterrent,” the Chief said.

Open defecation is high in Atimpoku at the moment after their only public toilet facility was demolished for the construction of a new one before the end of 2019, however, the project has been abandoned.

The toilet project is among the thousands of toilet facility projects initiated by Government of Ghana in collaboration with Ghana First company limited but all abandoned at various stages of completion across the country.
