Gov’t working to address perennial floods and its associated risk – Asenso-Boakye

Minister for Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye has revealed that there is an ongoing project by the government to help address the issue of perennial flooding in parts of the country.





According to the minister, a flood early warning system is being developed to enhance the flood resilience of communities within the Odaw drainage basin and beyond.

He noted that under the 2021 National Flood Control Programme, the government has constructed 19km of drains, adding that some 1,000km will be required to deal with perennial flooding in the country.

As the Ghana Meteorological Agency is warning of more rains this season, some Ghanaians have questioned the preparedness of authorities to avert another looming challenge of flooding in parts of the country especially Accra.

However, speaking at a news conference on Sunday, 27 June 2021, Mr Asenso-Boakye disclosed that the government is collaborating with the World Bank to implement the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Project (GARID) which will mitigate flood risks and address solid waste management at the Odaw drainage basin.

The minister also entreated members of the general public to desist from filling the country’s drainage systems with solid waste materials.
