GMB 2020 winner, Naa Deidei, cushions brilliant but needy students via foundation

Naa Deidei Botchwey, crowned Ghana’s Most Beautiful (GMB) 2020, has rigorously pursued her inclusive education initiative to impact society positively.

Through her foundation, Naa Deidei Botchwey (NDB) Foundation, she helped 20 brilliant but needy females to gain a scholarship to pursue a Marine Engineering Mechanic program at the Regional Maritime University, funded by the Ga Mantse Foundation.

Speaking to Cookie on TV3 New Day, the reigning GMB queen said the rigorous training lasted nine weeks instead of six months. Naa Deidei explained that the time change was due to the reoccurring of students in and out of the school premises to continue their academic activities.

“The course was actually for six months, but the students of that program could go home and come back. So those six months were compressed into nine weeks, so there was intense learning”.

“The university gave us a 50 per cent discount on fees and gave us free accommodation,” she added.

Naa expressed appreciation to all sponsors for making her initiative to impact lives possible.

A beneficiary of the foundation, Unicrystal Naa Atswei Quaye, said she has always yearned to take up a course in engineering. Thus she is grateful for the opportunity to apply and be selected.




“A friend sent the flier to me via WhatsApp, and when I saw it, I was like I have been wanting to do this for a while. If I have gotten the opportunity, why not grab it,” she recounted.

“After applying, I was called for an interview. They gave me a call back that I passed, and I have been given the scholarship,” she added.

Ms Quaye stated that although taking up the course was demanding, it was also fun because she was fascinated with the program.

Naomi Sackey, another beneficiary, stated that all beneficiaries are eligible to take up a Chief Engineer (most senior officer) position on a ship.
She mentioned that beneficiaries underwent engineering workshops in protective clothing, which helped them explore the actual process in practice.

Ms Sackey appreciated the GMB initiative for making it possible for all beneficiaries of the NDB foundation to gain a scholarship to improve themselves.

The scholarship comes along with an internship opportunity at the Volta River Authority (VRA).
