Akwaboah Jnr sings RNB not highlife music – DJ Premier

Bismark Boakye, popularly known as DJ Premier, who has over 20 years of experience in DJ, has disclosed that Akwaboah Jnr should be recognised as an RNB singer, not a highlife musician.

Speaking to Onua Fm’s James Clarke on Anigye mere on Friday, DJ Premier said that Akwaboah’s music genre is RNB, not highlife as he (Akwaboah) has always touted.

He said, “Akwaboah Jnr is not doing highlife, but he is doing RNB. When we say high life, we mean highlife as a style of urban recreational dance that was popular in West Africa in the 1950s. It originated in Ghana, where musicians adopted Western dance-band instruments at open-air nightclubs to celebrate the exuberant spirit of independence.”

According to DJ Premier, when we talk about people who make high life music, they are E.T Mensah, AB Crentsil, Amakye Dede, Ebo Taylor and many more. The rest are not doing high life music but RNB.

Gladstorm Kwabena Akwaboah Jnr., known by his stage name as Akwaboah Jnr, is a Ghanaian singer-songwriter and producer from Mampong Beposo. He wrote ‘Daa Ke Daa’ for Becca and ‘Ayeyi Ndwom’ for DSP Kofi Sarpong.
