GPL: Kotoko and AshantiGold secure opening day wins as Hearts draw in Accra

Match week one of the 2021/2022 Ghana Premier League season produced seventeen goals and the league took full flight this weekend with some interesting results.

Ghana Premier League debutants, Accra Lions played out a 1-1 draw with Elmina Sharks at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday night in the first fixture of the new season.

Asante Kotoko pulled out the magic hat in the last six minutes of their game against Dreams FC by scoring three goals after the “Still Believe Boys” scored in the 64th minute.

Debutant Fatawu Issahaku scored for the Believers, while Isaac Oppong came from the bench to score and provide two assists to inspire Kotoko to victory.

On Sunday, defending champions of the league, Hearts of Oak failed to win another opening fixture in the league – making it five consecutive seasons without winning their first game. The Phobians picked up a point after a goalless draw with Maxwell Konadu’s Legon Citites.





Bibiani GoldStars triumphed over Berekum Chelsea 1-0 to record a historic victory. A Kingsford Boafo goal ensured Gold Stars won their first game in the league.

Former Asante Kotoko captain, Emmanuel Gyamfi scored his first goal for Aduana Stars in their thrilling game against Karela United at the Crosby Awuah Memorial Park in Anyinase. Hafiz Dogo equalised for the “Pride and Passion” lads.

In the game involving King Faisal and West African Football Academy, Zubeiru Ibrahim’s goal for King Faisal separated the two sides at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Bechem United comfortably scored four unanswered goals against Medeama SC on the opening day at home. Augistine Okrah, Francis Twene and a brace from Emmanuel Aveyor ensured the Hunters came out victorious.

Ashantigold picked their first three points of the season after Eric Esso scored the only goal in the game against Techiman Eleven Wonders.

In the last fixture of the week, Great Olympics drew 1-1 with Real Tamale United at the Aliu Mahama Sports stadium in Tamale.
