Ben Ephson warns NPP over proposal to fix presidential primaries two years before polls

Pollster Ben Ephson has warned that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will be doomed if its proposal to elect a presidential candidate two years ahead of an election while in office is adopted.

The Managing Editor of Daily Dispatch newspaper said “it will be worse off” for the NPP because it will create cracks within the party ahead of the election.

The NPP rescheduled to the next conference all proposals tabled for amendment at the 2021 Annual Delegates’ Conference held in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region over the weekend.

Major on the bill was to elect a presidential candidate two clear years before election when the party is in office.

This, the party believes, would afford them ample time to mend any wounds that might have arisen during the primaries before the election.

Reacting to the issue on 3FM’s Sunrise hosted by Alfred Ocansey on Monday, Mr. Ephson said “if they change the proposal from one year to two years of presidential primaries ahead of a major election, they will be worse off”.

“The president who is exiting and the authority within the government will be split. Those coming in and their leaders will be split.”

Mr. Ephson explained that “a year to the election, the sitting president will become obsolete…There would be split allegiances. The government will crawl on its knees. Allegiances will be split”.

“I will be very surprised if the NEC considers that and adopts it. They should still maintain the one year. You don’t need two years to resolve what happens out of primaries.”
