Choosing a successor requires more than throwing salvos – Franklin Cudjoe to Akufo-Addo

Founding President of Imani Africa, Mr Fraknlin Cudjoe, has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to let his records in government speak for him and the governing party as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) makes plans to choose who succeeds him as the next presidential candidate of the party.

Mr Cudjoe noted that the making of a successor-King requires more than just throwing salvos at political opponents.

“The making of a successor-King requires more than throwing salvos at your political opponents. Let your records speak for you. My greatest worry is, that I don’t know the current direction of government’s macro-economic policy. IMANI’s first major public engagement in 2022 shall be dedicated to dealing with this deepening sense of lack of direction,” he said in a Facebook post.

His comments come on the heels of the determination by the President to hand over power to the next residential candidate of the NPP on 7th January 2025 after the 2024 general elections.

He said the NPP is determined to break the 8-year cycle in order to sustain the economic growth seen under his administration.

Speaking at the NPP’s delegates conference in Kumasi on Sunday December 19, he said “I am determined to hand over the baton to the next NPP presidential candidate.

“We want to break the 8 not just for ourselves but for Ghana because we know the zigzag, NPP comes to clean for them to be polluted , this is not the way progress will be brought to our country.

“We need secure period in office to make that irreversible change in the fortunes of our nation and we are capable of doing it. We will get a candidate that will unify our party and all of us will campaign to make that candidate the next president of the Republic.”

He further urged members of the NPP to embrace internal competition because competitions are part of the political exercise but cautioned the party against unhealthy competition that will hinder the determination of the party to break the 8-year cycle in the next general elections.

Mr Akufo-Addo said “Competition, we cannot avoid competition. Competition there will be but let that competition help the party and not hinder the party so that we can break the 8 in 2024.”






He further taunted the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) when he asked about the one policy that the NDC and former President John Mahama have thought about in five years that they have been in opposition.

“We have spent more money in improving the circumstances of our people than any government in the 4th republic. So when u leave here be proud that you have produced a government that has been most diligent in improving the lives of the people than any other government in the history of this country.

“All the things that we have done in government are things we thought about while in opposition, what is the one policy that the NDC and their leader John Mahama have thought about in five years that they have been in opposition. There is not one policy, the answer is zero,” the President said.

Meanwhile Mr John Dramani Mahama has responded to him saying if only Mr Akufo-Addo took a moment, in the comfort of his chartered jet, to read the People’s manifesto, he would have at least learnt about the policies introduced by the NDC.

“I think the President must take his responsibilities seriously and focus on working to change the circumstances of our people, rather than the rabble-rousing skits he serves the nation.

“To answer his rhetorical question on policy, if only he took a moment, in the comfort of his chartered jet, to read the People’s manifesto, he would have at least learnt about the ‘Big Push’ (an accelerated infrastructure plan for Ghana), ‘Free Primary Health Care Plan’, the ‘1 million jobs plan’, ‘Ghana FIRST’ (Framework for Industrial Revitalisation, Support and Transformation) and several other well-thought-through and costed policies.

“I am willing to provide him with an autographed copy of the manifesto. With his speech of yesterday, he has carved his niche as a good campaigner, but unfortunately a poor leader as Ghanaians have found out at great cost,” Mr Mahama said in a Facebook post.
