The Ghana Education Service (GES) has dismissed prominent teacher and education activist Michael Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Teacher Kwadwo.
Teacher Kwadwo announced his dismissal from the Service on his Facebook wall.
“Okay, so for some “PROFESSIONAL” reasons I can’t post the content of the letter here but all that is in the letter is that, my District Education Office through Ghana Education Service says that, they have sacked me.”
Mr. Owusu Afriyie gained prominence for his advocacy for educational reforms and even distributed educational materials to schools across the country with much emphasis on schools in rural areas.
He has over the years been protesting and demanding that the plight of the Ghanaian teacher be improved.
It is unclear what necessitated the dismissal but in one of his Facebook posts, he said, “I am sorry if you saw me as ARROGANT PERSON whilst trying to fight this course. I am not arrogant. I have sooooo much passion for teaching that I couldn’t stand the treatment against Teachers and students(especially in the rural areas) from Ghana Education Service.”
He said he will not be returning to the classroom and will move on to other exploits but he will be “taking this matter to COURT not for anything but just to make the world see the rots in Ghana Education Service CLEARLY.”
He said his dismissal had been planned sometime back except the Ghana Education Service was looking for a way out or the most conducive time to notify him because “the SACKING letter that was given to me yesterday is dated ’27th October 2021’”.
