Show us which market China-cassava are sold – Dep Agric Minister dares NDC MP

A Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture in Charge of Crops, Yaw Frimpong Addo has called Ghanaians to disregard the propaganda peddled by the main opposition National Democratic Congress’ Member of Parliament for Asunafo South Constituency in the Ahafo Region, Eric Opoku that Ghana imports a large number of cassava from China to augment its food stock.

The Deputy Minister has dared the NDC MP to show Ghanaians which market the imported Chinese cassava are sold in the country.

“Mr. Opoku should be willing to show us the very markets, he and his NDC members saw the Chinese imported cassava being sold,” Mr Addo said.

The Deputy Minister who is also the governing New Patriotic Party’s MP for Manso Adubia Constituency in the Ashanti Region said this on the Ghana Yensom morning show on Accra 100.5 FM hosted by Kwame Obeng Sarkodie on Monday, March 28, 2022.

He warned that as a Ministry, “we will not sit down for some of this propaganda about the successes of Planting for Food and Jobs to go unchecked”.

He stressed that Planting for Food and Jobs has enrolled over 1.5 million farmers onto the programme which shows how the programme has been helpful to farmers in the country.

Mr Addo noted that with the introduction of the Planting for Food and Jobs farmers have been supplied with improved yields to multiply their yields.

He admitted that there have been instances where industrial starch had been imported from China for industrial use and not for consumption.

These he explained are not cassava so to speak that can directly be consumed as purported by the NDC MP in his claim.

He was quick to add that there is no scarcity of cassava in the country adding that contrary, the introduction of the Planting for Food and Jobs has increased yields leading to the export of some of these raw crop products to countries like Burkina Faso, Togo, Ivory Coast just like the way “we also import from them.”
