Ho: MTN to address network problem in rural Ghana with $1b investment

Telecommunication giants MTN Ghana Limited has announced a $1billion investment plan to address network challenges across the country especially in rural communities.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Mobile Money -a subsidiary of the company, Mr. Eli Hini, the plan is part of activities aimed at improving and maintaining network leadership by 2025 in line with Ghana’s digital drive.

The investment plan would lead to the provision of rural telephony sites as well as the extention of network to some 398 rural areas.

Mr. Hini who was addressing journalists from the Volta and Oti regions during the 2022 Editors Forum held in Ho also disclosed that all 260 Districts in the country has been covered with the Fourth Generation (4G) network.

He added that, “We (MTN) would be rolling out 400 new sites while some 746 would be upgraded to 4G to ensure that superior services are provided to our customers.”

The MoMo CEO noted further that despite the huge investments the company is making, increasing cases of fibre cuts across the country continue to hinder stable and effective network provision to some parts of the country.

According to him, fibre cut has seen an increase from 819 to 939 between January to May, 2022 resulting in 11 percent of traffic impact monthly for this year alone -a phenomenon he linked to road construction and private development activities.

He appealed to the media to intensify education within the public domain while urging contractors to pay critical attention to the issue of fibre cuts to ensure unlimited access to the network across the country.
