U-20 Women’s World Cup: Ghana coach remains confident despite heavy friendly defeat

Ghana coach Ben Fokuo remains confident that his team will excel at the U-20 Women’s World Cup despite losing heavily to France in a friendly last Friday.

The French were outstanding, scoring four goals against the Black Princesses in a warm-up match for both teams ahead of the World Cup in Costa Rica.

Vicki Becho’s first-half brace, Esther Mbakem-smart Nairo’s finish, and Laurina Fazer’s penalty secured victory for the hosts at Clairefontaine.

“After the France game, we had recovery training and the girls are responding to treatment and picking up gradually after the loss against France,” Fokuo told ghanafa.org.

“The tempo of the game with France was totally different from what we expected but now we have seen the problems and with training sessions we had, you can see that the players are picking up quickly and making sure they get their strength to the level of the competition.”

Fokuo revealed that the team will play another friendly in Costa Rica and hopes that they will be at a great level before their first game.

“We will train hard and make sure our strength and fitness level is at the level we want,” he added.

Black Princesses will play their first game against the United States on Thursday, August 11, 2022. Three days later, they will face Japan, and on August 17, they will conclude their group stage campaign against the Netherlands.

Ghana will attempt to advance from the group stage for the first time, after failing in their previous five appearances.
